From humble beginnings as an apprentice fitter for the National Coal Board (NCB), John’s passion for fluid power led him to the NFPC. Initially tasked with teaching thermodynamics, he saw an opportunity to establish formal, bespoke training in fluid power. This marked the start of a transformative journey and the formation of the National Fluid Power Centre.
With over 50 years of experience involving hydraulics, pneumatics and in the later years electro-hydraulics & control, one of my greatest satisfactions has been that of building a team of training engineers and business specialists here at the NFPC and all from UK industry. I am extremely proud of my team here at the NFPC and every day our priority is to meet and exceed our customers needs and expectations and improve their ability to manage and maintain todays integrated fluid power systems and control.

Witham Group has had a professional relationship with The National Fluid Power Centre for 30+ years. We would describe the NFPC as a true centre of excellence for fluid power training and support and we have used their inhouse and bespoke courses for many of our customers applications. Their depth of technical expertise, hands-on facilities, and industry-focused approach make them an invaluable resource for our customers, who include engineers and technicians at every stage of their careers. The training is practical, up to date, and delivered by knowledgeable instructors who clearly understand real-world applications. NFPC consistently sets the benchmark for quality, professionalism, and innovation in fluid power education.
The feedback we give is that the hands-on aspects of the course is invaluable for the design engineers. The Stage 2 Mobile Hydraulics course provided further learning for all involved and has allowed a review of our current systems. This review has identified potential leak paths and efficiencies that could be resolved or implemented, creating a better product for our customer and less potential issues for us in the field.
When looking into expanding my knowledge on hydraulic systems and equipment I looked for a training provider In the UK that could provide just that. The NFPC was top of the list and for good reason, having started my training in 2023 I progressed through the stages with the help of the tutors and the great facility’s to hand at the NFPC. The wealth of knowledge and experience showcased at this facility truly is worth the investment, completing my IH3 CETOP qualification is one of my biggest achievements to date.
The training delivered at the NPFC is first class. High quality presentations from knowledgeable experts, complimented by a well-equipped facility to support the practical learning. This has helped me to develop my hydraulics and electrical knowledge throughout my career. Kawasaki continue to use the NFPC to train our Engineers and technical staff to support in the development of their core competencies.
I am extremely grateful for the support the NFPC provided us in ensuring that our Agile Maintenance L&D programme was implemented on time and in full. The training provided and the customer focus delivered was second to none and the feedback received from all the delegates (58 in total) who benefited from a range of pneumatics, hydraulics and PLC courses was very positive indeed.
Webtec have been supporters of the NFPC for many years and the NFPC remains the ‘go to’ place for hydraulic training in the UK. They have outstanding facilities and attending courses at the NFPC is a mandatory part of our training programme for those involved in the design, sales or marketing of our hydraulic measurement and control products.
As a technical trainer I visited the NFPC seeking a hydraulic qualification that would evidence a level of understanding and add value to my own training. Starting at Level 1, knowledgeable instructors and excellent facilities enticed me back time and time again, until I recently completed the CETOP Level 3 in Mobile Hydraulics. Each level of training has improved my knowledge, collectively adding confidence and clarity to every situation.
Very grateful to have spent the last few days up at the National Fluid Power Centre Limited in Worksop completing their Stage 1 Hydraulics course. Would highly recommend it to anyone who wants further their knowledge of Hydraulics. Great facility with some fantastic equipment and staff, especially hydraulic guru Graham Rowley. The service and delivery of training by the NFPC to our offshore wind turbine technician apprentices has been outstanding. The knowledge and practical experience they gain in fully equipped, hi-tech workshops enhances the apprentices’ ability to align themselves with an essential part of their job. We have worked closely with John Savage and his colleagues to fine tune the program to give our apprentices the best possible start to understanding turbine hydraulic systems, nothing has been too much trouble. Every apprentice has been fully engaged with the training given and their feedback has been exceptional such as “Best training I’ve ever done” and “I’ve learned so much on this course”. Our experience of The NFPC has been excellent and we look forward to continuing working with John and his team and to developing our relationship with The NFPC in the near future.
